Sendai 仙台 – Tohoku – Letters from Japan

Sendai is located near the coast in northern Japan in the Tohoku region. With just over a million people, it has everything a typical city has to offer— professional sports teams, modern trains and subways, and countless options for shopping, dining, and night time entertainment.

The modern city of Sendai was founded around 1600 by Date Masamune, one of feudal Japan’s most powerful lords.

Sendai is a city in Japan’s Tohoku Region, northeast of Tokyo on Honshu island. The remains of 17th-century Sendai Castle, built for samurai lord Date Masamune on Aoba Hill, overlook the city and include a museum of historic artifacts. The Sendai City Museum focuses on the history and culture of Japan’s Edo period, and displays Masamune’s samurai armor.

There are a number of similarities between our new home in Sendai, and the place we called home for the last 30 years. Seattle has Amazon, Sendai is the headquarters of the Japanese e-commerce giant Rakuten. Sendai’s Morning Market started about 100 years ago, when farmers from outlying areas brought food to see to city folks. Sounds a little like the Pike Place Market!

Over the coming months we plan to share lots of posts and images of our new home city. So many of you have asked where we will live, what it is like there, and what we will do in Sendai.
